Maternal Waist Circumference and the Prediction of Children's Metabolic Syndrome

I read with great interest the article by Hirschler et al,1 who studied the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) components in 620 children aged 5 to 13 years from 5 public elementary schools and their mothers. In this study, the authors have reported that MS was present in 10.8% of children overall, of whom 1.0% had a healthy weight, 10.7% were overweight, and 43.9% were obese (P < .001). Moreover, Hirschler et al have observed a strong association between children's MS and central obesity of the children's mothers. Criteria analogous to those of the Adult Treatment Panel III definition for MS have been used for children in this study.
