With great interest, we read 3 recent articles in the Archives about vitamin D.1-3 Even as vitamin D is the focus of increased exposure during its moment in the American "sun,"2 American medical trainees are increasingly interested in global health.4 Therefore, we offer some additional comments to frame the recent Archives articles1-3 in a global context.
Vitamin D deficiency and rickets are global problems. While rickets has made a resurgence in North America, there has also been an awareness that nutritional rickets is common in many tropical and subtropical areas.5 Millions of Bangladeshi children have nutritional rickets,6 and up to 9% of children have clinical signs of rickets in some areas of Nigeria.7
