In the May issue of the Archives, Nicholas M. Nelson, MD,¹ reviewed a book about pediatric subspecialties. He mentions that genetics is a "major pediatric subspecialt[y] . . . not yet (nor likely to be) graced by an ABP [American Board of Pediatrics] subboard certifying examination."

I would agree that genetics is unlikely to have an ABP subboard, but not because genetics is "a very new clinical focus"; rather, because genetics is a separate specialty and has been a full-member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties since 1991. It is not a subspecialty of pediatrics or any other area of medicine. Genetics has its own residencies, medical board, and certifying process.
