In April 2002, more than 100 pediatricians from the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia convened in London, England, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the inception of the exchange program between St Mary's Hospital in London and the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, Mass. The attendees were former US pediatric residents or UK registrars who participated in either the London/Boston exchange that existed from 1952 through 1978 or the exchange between Oxford University (Oxford, England) and the Duke University Department of Pediatrics (Durham, NC), which began in 1986 and continued unchanged through 2005. These 2 bilateral exchanges produced a generation of trainees who made important contributions both to their home and visited countries.
