Serious disparities related to sexual orientation adversely affect the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth.1 Running away, homelessness, difficulties in school, tobacco and other substance use, suicidality, eating disorders, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are among the many medical and psychosocial challenges they face.2 Existing data suggest that rates of these problems have not abetted over time in LGBT populations.3-4

On the recent 25th anniversary of the first reported cases in the United States, HIV/AIDS provides a stunning example of persistent and devastating health disparities. Although fewer than 3% of high school–aged students report same sex experiences,5 young men (13-24 years of age) who have sex with men account for 57% of all reported HIV/AIDS cases in adolescents and young adults in the US.6 A large percentage of HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual youth have not been tested and are unaware . . .
