This moment of play and celebration was captured at Spiral Garden, an integrated, outdoor, art, garden, and play program that runs each summer at Bloorview MacMillan Children’s Centre in Toronto. Here a child with a disability and one without work with the puppeteer Susiawan to animate the dragon created by many hands and hearts in the garden. The dragon emerged as part of this year’s last-day celebration. Each summer for the past 21 years, children with and without disabilities have come together with artists from the community to explore, express, and celebrate their connections to one another and the natural world. Spiral Garden and its sister program, Cosmic Bird Feeder, are supported by the MacMillan Children’s Foundation, tuition fees, and the dedication of the artists, gardeners, musicians, and families who have built a community on this small piece of ground. The team of artists and gardeners staffing the program work to provide activities accessible at many different levels as the children, aged 6 to 16, come to the program with a wide range of abilities.
