We appreciate Dr Chamberlain’s letter in response to our recent article. While we had school health personnel providing care at each school in our urban school district at the time of our research program, budget crises continually have put this situation at risk in our community. The findings from our study (improved outcomes on several measures for urban children with asthma receiving daily inhaled corticosteroid from the school nurse) demonstrate one more clear benefit of the school nurse program, particularly for urban children. We join Dr Chamberlain and her colleagues in a strong plea to restore funding for the school nurses who support the health and well-being of our most vulnerable children.
