Board Preparation Strategies

A successful score on the American Board of Pediatrics certifying examination is essential for residents and pediatric residency programs alike. The Residency Review Committee reviews cumulative 5-year data on first-time pass rates for certification examinations in its Program Information Form, prompting residency programs to systematically address preparation for the pediatric boards. Providing programs that improve board performance is a critical issue common to all residencies.
Much has been written about what correlates with performance on board examinations; however, no reports were found in the literature that evaluated the use of a preparatory course. We report a study designed to identify current pediatric board preparation strategies. A brief survey addressing program demographics, types, usefulness, and the effect of strategies on pass rate was sent to all pediatric residency program directors.
