As one who has been rather cynical about the buzzword holistic and those who use it, I was pleasantly surprised with this friendly, even-handed, helpful, and informative book, couched in a style and language understandable to both lay readers and pediatricians. It espouses an open-minded but critical approach to both alternative and mainstream medical therapies and provides understandable, adequate descriptions of each for readers who are unfamiliar with them. Although the book appears to be written for the lay reader oriented toward alternative medicine, it constitutes a balanced, convenient, and reliable reference for both parent and physician.

In the introduction, Dr Kemper makes 2 statements that are key to her approach and the use of the book: "I see parents as the primary providers of health care and myself as their coach. . . .
