High School Students Are Also Adversely Affected by Bullying

Using the Health Behavior of School-aged Children survey, Nansel et al1 demonstrated a positive statistically significant relationship between bullying and weapon carrying among students in grades 6 through 10. Assessment of the relationship between bullying and weapon carrying among high school students can be derived from the 1999 School Crime Supplement of the National Crime Victimization Survey.2 This survey describes a nationally representative sample of children aged 12 through 18 years who had attended school for a portion of the prior 6 months. One survey question asked the respondents to indicate whether they had been bullied during the prior 6 months. Three questions asked whether they had carried a weapon during the prior 6 months: "Did you ever bring a gun to school? Did you ever bring a knife to school?
