What's It All About and What's in It for Me?

EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE1 (EBM) is the academic way of saying that you're from Missouri: Don't just say it; show me. Evidence-based medicine has become increasingly important in evaluating old and new therapies and in providing residents and veteran physicians with the tools they need to be practical skeptics. Christakis et al2 have laid out the rationale for EBM in pediatrics.

The culture of formal EBM has not penetrated pediatric education and discussion as much as it has internal medicine. To that end, the editors of ARCHIVES have instituted this new journal club.3 The purposes of the EBM journal club are (1) to provide clinicians with structured critiques of important studies; (2) to provide clinicians with models for performing EBM critiques on their own; (3) to provide teachers with models of the use of EBM in residency-based journal clubs; and (4) to provide readers with navigation tools to use the World Wide . . .
