Pediatric Advocacy: More Lessons

We are writing with regard to our article, published in the August issue of the ARCHIVES, describing our experience advocating for the establishment of a nurse home visitation program in Arkansas. We appreciate the focus on advocacy that the ARCHIVES has chosen to pursue and were pleased to have the opportunity to share our experiences.

While our article was in press, a decision was made to cancel the program due to budget constraints at the Arkansas Department of Health. This is a particularly unfortunate circumstance given the profound need for proven prevention programs in this state. It is also clear that implementation of the model program had been successful here. This illustrates that despite the enthusiasm for such programs, fiscal realities combined with the costs of primary prevention programs make them difficult to sustain.
