The rationale for practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM) is rooted
in the explosion of health care research and the importance of physicians
continually incorporating this new information into practice. The ability
to practice EBM has been aided by the dramatic improvements in information
technology made during the past decade. The adaptation of explicit EBM principles
by pediatricians has been slower than by our colleagues in family medicine
or internal medicine. With several recent publications of texts on EBM for
pediatricians, including the most recent by Dr William Feldman, this trend
is clearly changing.
The text is organized into 23 chapters, each dealing with common problems
in pediatrics, from health maintenance visits to cardiovascular problems,
learning disabilities, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Each
chapter is written by contributors who have expertise in the respective specific
area and are able to cover a number of aspects related to that area. For example,
