Dr DeAngelis commented on the article by Luria et al1 in the March issue of the ARCHIVES that "another safety education program [has gone] down the drain." I think it is unfair to trash all such programs of safety intervention without looking more carefully at this article. The educational program was only 1 day long and the testing instrument was not related to real life. It seems to me a more appropriate method of evaluation would be to stand at a street corner near the school and watch children cross or to set up an encounter with a stranger or some other real-life application of the program.
For the past 2 decades, Ann Arbor, Mich, has held Safety Town, a summer program consisting of 10 half-days of instruction with certified elementary school teachers and other volunteers.
