Peripheral Neuropathy in Childhood is the second edition in the International Review of Child Neurology series, crediting Australian neurologists for their contribution to the field of child neurology. Since the book's first edition in 1990, there have been remarkable advances in the understanding of peripheral neuropathy in childhood. Phenomenal progress in molecular genetics has led to the discovery of the genes for the common forms of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies, while for others, a linkage to specific regions of the genome was identified. Major advances in the pathophysiology and treatment of Guillain-Barré syndrome and its variants have occurred, and new types of peripheral neuropathies have been described. Advances in treatment of peripheral neuropathies, on the other hand, have been rather small and limited to inflammatory and metabolic neuropathies. We are hopeful that it is only a matter of time before some specific treatments emerge from the genetic technology.
