The fifth edition of this British textbook seems a shade less excellent than the fourth, despite having the expected new material on genetics and molecular biology. I have approached reviewing the book by concentrating both on sections where I am knowledgeable and current and on those where I have only cursory knowledge. I found the physiology and diagnostic sections to be first rate, if occasionally couched in rather dense language. An exception was the section on rickets and metabolic bone disease, which was in the chapter on bones, joints, and connective tissue and also briefly in the chapter on nutrition. Here the discussion was barely adequate and the treatment recommendations for metabolic bone disease were almost 40 years out-of-date. For most conditions, treatment is not given much space and often will not be helpful to the reader.
