As it has been reported that sore nipples remain the major reason for failing to establish successful breast-feeding, I was pleased to read the article by Brent et al¹ in the November 1998 issue of the ARCHIVES. The study provides important evidence of the superiority of an economical, natural remedy for a condition that is both painful and problematic for breast-feeding mothers. It would be unfortunate indeed if this simple remedy were to also become a cause of breast-feeding problems.

The authors refer to the topical ointment used in the study alternately as lanolin, lanolin cream, and modified lanolin. It is important for the reader to understand that lanolin is no longer a generic material.
