The editors of this book have assembled 37 chapters by different authors to detail the underlying causes and effects of failure to thrive and pediatric undernutrition, which they regard as identical. It seems that they intended the book to be used as a reference rather than to be read from cover to cover, which I find appropriate. No new ground or concepts are expounded; rather, the multifactorial causes that give rise to undernutrition and growth failure and the guises in which they appear to the clinician are emphasized. Unlike in most books on nutrition, there is emphasis on behavioral aspects and the role of the community in management. On the other hand, there is no discussion of the elements of good nutrition and what constitutes adequate nutrition. Other than global undernutrition, specific nutritional diseases are not delineated. I found some chapters well presented and others merely derivative of other books . . .
