This volume on the breathing of the fetus and neonate has 3 sections: the first is on the physiology of breathing, the second on pathophysiology, and the third on clinical applications. The first section begins with an overview of the structural development of the lungs, stressing that the development of lungs goes beyond organogenesis and continues during the development of the fetus. The alveolization of the lung takes place between the 36th week of gestation and age 2 years and the microvasculature matures between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. The endoderm and mesoderm derivation of the lung is well illustrated with excellent light and electron microscopy figures that demonstrate the dynamics of the understanding of the development of the lungs.
