The most impressive feature of this guide, based on Dr Korsh's 50 years of experience as a physician as well as her experience as an educator and a patient, is the balanced approach it takes to the doctor-patient relationship. From the first chapter, which presents a point-counterpoint of complaints of patients about doctors and vice versa, the rights and responsibilities of both sides of the relationship are explored equally. The greater part of the book is devoted to a detailed discussion of these "complaints," which promotes empathy for the other side of the "partnership" and acceptance of one's responsibility for making the partnership work. Particularly instructive are the authors' commentaries on numerous actual encounters between doctors and patients that provide insight into the causes of miscommunication and some strategies for overcoming them.
