Curriculum Changes Need Not Be Bad

Potts and Phelan1 present an interesting review of the outcomes of a change in the curriculum at their pediatric clerkship site. I question whether their data support their conclusion. They do not give enough information to conclude that the 2 student groups are equal. It is commonplace in many schools for students to select their clerkship site and these choices are made according to many variables, including rumored test performance. It is also unclear what emphasis the test was given at the Peoria, Ill, site. Students will do well on what they believe is important to their grade, which is supported by the improvement in the scores on the essay test administered at the Rockford, Ill, site. It would have been interesting to see a comparison of the 2 sites prior to the change and of the Rockford site before and after the change.
