This is a well-written, informative little book by various British authors who are experts in the field of ideological assessment and treatment of pediatric deafness. Designed to answer the commonly asked questions of the pediatrician and other medical personnel, it is divided into 10 easy-to-read chapters. Each chapter stands alone and is a concise review of its topic.
Chapter 1 is a general overview of deafness, the various types and their incidence, and early warning signs for parents. Chapter 2 surveys the causes of deafness, classifying them as prenatal or postnatal. Chapter 3 reviews behavioral hearing tests with brief descriptions of the techniques involved and the limitations of each test. Chapter 4 discusses the pure-tone audiometer and the use of masking and bone conduction vs air conduction. It supplies a list of the symbols used in audiometry reports and also gives examples and interpretations of various types of audiograms.
