This is a truly exhaustive treatise on the subject of pediatric intensive care. This is the third edition of a standard text on critical care in children. In addition to the chief editor, the list of contributors reads like a "Who's Who" of pediatric intensivists. The editors have done an excellent job of assembling a book with uniformity of writing style and approach to topics.

Unlike its predecessors, the third edition is in 1 volume. It contains 50 chapters and is subdivided by topic into 10 sections. A new section has been added to review pediatric intensive care unit quality assurance, outcome analysis, and ethical issues. Numerous tables and diagrams are easy to follow. Several chapters contain a brief, but quite fine, overview of the molecular biology of several disease processes.
