The Decline of Rheumatic Fever

What Impact on Our Management of Pharyngitis?

STANFORD T. SHULMAN, MD

Am J Dis Child. 1984;138(5):426-427.

Abstract

Rheumatic fever—from 1925-1950—ranked first as cause of death in American children and adolescents five to nineteen years of age. It was the leading cause of heart disease below the age of forty.... In the late twenties, Alvin Coburn found that in one New York City hospital one-fourth of the beds were occupied by patients with active rheumatic fever or its aftermath during the spring, the peak season for the disease.
