Nephrotic syndrome in a Chinese infant

P. O. Hung, C. C. Huang and T. S. Huang

A male infant, 4 months and 5 days old, who was born with a large placenta, had had onset of edema on the 17th day of life. Heavy proteinuris, hematuris, striking hypoalbuminemia, and hypercholesterolemia were noted in the first studied specimens on the 31st day of life. Corticosteroid therapy had no effect. The infant died on the 181st day after his birth. Pathological emamination disclosed large, pale kidneys with diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis and a marked epithelial degenerative change and dilation of proximal convoluted tubules.
