Disseminated Intravascular and Cardiac Thrombosis of the Neonate

Blaise E. Favara, MD; Ralph A. Franciosi, MD; L. Joseph Butterfield, MD

Am J Dis Child. 1974;127(2):197-204.

Abstract

The syndrome of disseminated intravascular and vegetative cardiac thrombosis occurred in 24 neonates. The syndrome, characterized by platelet thrombosis and cardiac valve platelet masses, is distinctly different from disseminated intravascular coagulation and resultant fibrin deposition in blood vessels without cardiac valve involvement. Speculations on cause and pathogenesis are made, and possible detrimental effects of heparin therapy are pointed out, since the disorder is one of platelet thrombosis rather than coagulation and fibrin development.
