A Curricular Experiment With the Nurse Pediatrist

Am J Dis Child. 1971;122(3):195-201.

Abstract

In an effort to develop the most appropriate curriculum for the education of the nurse pediatrist, two nurses, with different backgrounds in nursing sciences, participated in a 21-month experimental course designed to train the nurse for an extended role as a participant on the child health care team. The nurses learned and performed satisfactorily, and were well accepted by pediatricians and parents. Experience with this curricular experiment suggests that a course similarly designed in categorical content but abbreviated to 12 months would be sufficient. Although programs such as this are only in early stages of development throughout the country, we predict that within ten years the nurse pediatrist will be a well-established member of the superior child health care team, in both private and public practice.
